Manila math-folk voyeurs Fools and Foes are in this life together on their new song “Rift”.

Playing together since 2014, the four-piece create stunning soundscapes rooted in folk-pop and math rock. Unique is their embrace of their member’s individual directions. Complex layers are sewn through soaring melodies. Notably, they effortlessly melt epic vocals into rhythmic intricacies.

“Rift” is the third single lifted from their upcoming LP. Moreover, the track takes the band’s composition style to a whole new level. Rather than coming into the recording studio with a complete song, the outfit wrote “Rift” on the fly.

The result is a stand out track that radically departs from the tight performances on previous singles like “Sheriff” and “+63”. Instead, Fools and Foes treat fans to their raw dreamy side. The five minute song delivers a fleeting freedom that impatiently explores the quiet depths of the band. The reward is the song’s concluding ascent, like a soundtrack to the catharsis of adventure, of friends found and lost.

“In the end, we all still need each other.”

Vocalist and bassist Isabelle Romualdez said, “I think the change of songwriting style made us more attentive and gave us a different perspective. It was fun having all that freedom.”

Furthermore, “Rift” exemplifies the band’s bright optimism that life’s better done together. Romualdez said the lyrics reflect the rifts we create when problems and conflicts overwhelm us. “We tend to isolate ourselves or distance ourselves from people,” she said.

“However, this song is also about how we can’t really see how other people see us and that we always assume the worst, which is often not as bad as we think. In the end, we all still need each other,” said Romualdez.
